About Me
Panos Tziogkidis was born in Patras where he attended school and completed his undergraduate studies in Business Administration with distinction at the University of Patras. His undergraduate dissertation received the best student paper award at the conference of the Hellenic Operational Research Society in 2005, while an updated version was published in 2010 in OMEGA; one the most respected journals of the field of Operational Research. During his undergraduate studies, Panos had been very active, undertaking roles such as accounting systems computerization assistant at a public hospital and later as a Trainee Real Estate Investment Analyst at Eurobank Property Services, while at the same time enjoying his involvement as a classical guitarist with the classical stringed instruments ensemble “Evikoon Melos”.
In 2007 Panos obtained his MSc in Financial Economics from Cardiff University. Before graduating, he was employed as a Real Estate Investment Analyst at EFG Eurobank, where he evaluated multi-million projects in Greece and the Balkans, while further developing the real estate investment models of the bank. Later in his career, he would incorporate his practical knowledge on project evaluation in teaching advanced MBA modules at the ESSCA School of Management as a Visiting Lecturer. In 2008 he was offered a scholarship by Cardiff Business School to pursue a PhD in Economics, which was later further supported by funding from the Julian Hodge Institute of Applied Macroeconomics and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). By 2010, Panos completed an MSc in Economics (with Distinction) and an MRes Training in Advanced Economics, which were part of the PhD curriculum.
His PhD research focused on an in-depth evaluation of efficiency and productivity measurement techniques, and a proposal of a moment-generating bootstrap algorithm, with applications on banking. Part of his PhD was later published in the Annals of Operations Research. Before finishing his PhD thesis, Panos is employed in 2013 as a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Plymouth, were he taught core economic and quantitative modules, while undertaking administrative roles, including being the Vice Chair of the Faculty Research & Ethics Committee and an International Academic Liaison Person for the University’s partnership with BCA College Athens.
In 2015 Panos develops an increasing interest on policy-related research, after serving as an Expert Advisor for the US Department of Transportation on a project evaluating the efficiency of US Air Traffic Control Towers. In 2016, Panos starts working on the technical details of the construction of the Global Innovation Index, which is used by policymakers to provide an overview of countries’ innovation activities and to inform future actions. Panos is invited to present an early version of his work at the European Commission, while, based on feedback received, he works with his co-authors on identifying quantitatively the optimal innovation policy direction that each country should follow. The final research is published in one of the top journals of the field, the European Journal of Operational Research. In the meantime, Panos has been also working on research topics related to energy finance, the effect of bank regulation on productivity convergence, and herding. His papers appear in well-respected journals, such as the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, the Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organization and Energy Economics.
In 2020 he is elected as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Macedonia. His main teaching includes quantitative modules, while he also lectures on banking and cash flow modelling at the MSc programmes of the Department. He also maintains links with Cardiff University where he has been delivering an intensive two-day Workshop on Data Envelopment Analysis for MSc and PhD students, as well as industry practitioners since 2011.
His current research focuses on developing and applying models of multidirectional conditional convergence and conditional efficiency measurement. He is an ad-hoc reviewer for many journals and a regular member of the International Society for Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (ISEPA) and the Hellenic Finance and Accounting Association (HFAA).
