The Financial Technology and Strategic AI (FTSAI) Laboratory at the University of Macedonia is pleased to announce the approval of CLARITY – Cognitive Loss Assessment, Reporting and Interactive Training for the elderlY, a new collaborative research project applying advanced Artificial Intelligence methods to the prediction and monitoring of cognitive decline.

CLARITY has been approved for funding under the “Research – Innovate” (Ερευνώ – Καινοτομώ) programme, within Intervention II, Partnerships between Enterprises and Research Organisations, and will run for 36 months. The project has a total eligible budget of approximately €1.59 million, with approximately €475,000 allocated to the University of Macedonia, reflecting the substantial role of its research team in the development of the project’s core Artificial Intelligence components. The official application identifies the project as an e-health initiative focusing on AI-driven prediction of the progression of patients with cognitive disorders.

CLARITY aims to develop an AI-enabled digital environment for older adults and patients with cognitive disorders. The proposed system combines personalised digital interaction and non-pharmacological interventions with the capacity to assess the possible onset and progression of cognitive impairment. Through the use of AI-based digital assistants and personalised interaction, the system is designed to complement existing forms of care and support timely and better-informed clinical intervention.

A central scientific objective of the project is the development of AI-based models for prediction, early detection and monitoring of the progression of cognitive disorders, integrating data generated through the digital platform with clinical, laboratory and imaging information.

For the FTSAI Lab, CLARITY represents a significant development of its Strategic AI research pillar. Strategic AI, as pursued by the Laboratory, extends beyond the development of individual algorithms or improvements in predictive accuracy. It concerns the design, evaluation and deployment of advanced AI systems in complex real-world environments, where technological capabilities interact with human expertise, organisational processes and consequential decisions.

Within CLARITY, the University of Macedonia research team will contribute to core Artificial Intelligence components of the project, including AI agents and Large Language Models, predictive modelling and neural systems, and Wavelet Neural Networks for speech analysis. These activities bring together advanced AI methodologies within a demanding healthcare environment, where prediction is not an end in itself but part of a broader process of assessment, decision-making and intervention.

The project brings together the University of Macedonia, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, DATALABS and healthcare and diagnostic organisations in an interdisciplinary research partnership combining expertise in Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, clinical research and healthcare innovation. The University of Macedonia participates formally in the research consortium through its Research Committee.

Through CLARITY, the FTSAI Lab extends its research beyond financial systems while remaining firmly within its broader scientific mission: to investigate how advanced Artificial Intelligence can be designed, evaluated and integrated into high-impact decision environments, and how AI capabilities can be translated into systems that create meaningful value for individuals, organisations and society.
